English Comp. 2 2/24/15 Symbolism on “A Rose for Emily”
The short story by William Faulkner tells how Miss Emily grew up as a very shelter girl from a well known family of her town. Never could anyone image that her upbringing that her father decided for her would have so much effect on her adult life. She faces the falling of the South alone with adversity. Faulkner has several instances of symbolism with the house, dust as well as her aging symbolizing cultural decay, death, and fierce independence.
The short story function as a parable concerning the South as it was experienced by Faulkner. It shows the South rotting. He argues the South comes out as a moribund society, which sustains itself with injustice, cruelty and illusions (Binder 5). Still it is some attempt to defend itself from the revelation that was occurring, change that is. Which by all means should be accepted. It reveals a culture that was rooted with valves that wasn’t agreed upon toward the new generation of the town. The South was dying, and Miss Emily was witnessing it first hand. “She carried her head high enough – even when we believed that she was fallen” (Faulkner 519). Her Grierson’s name was her pride. Everything her father stood on and meant to her made her hold her integrity through her life changes. Obviously her social status had declined; I would say that her prideful demeanor still held respect with some of the town people. Being very emotionless as if she was numb to what her life has become, or not processing any of it. She never loses her self respect, chin up as the townspeople whisper and spoke of what thought was. Miss Emily rather die with dignitity in her mind that give the town a truth moment inside her
