Finally, Harper Lee shows that Atticus is fighting for the Negros with the symbol of Atticus’s car. Scout conveys this when she says, “Our father had a few peculiarities, one was….that he liked to walk. As far back as I could remember, there was always a Chevrolet in excellent condition in the car house….in Maycomb he walked to and from his office four times a day.”(Lee 198) She says this when Atticus is leaving to go see Tom at the jail in the middle of the night. At this time in history, not everyone owned a car. The fact that Atticus owned one and rarely used it, keeping it in top condition, shows that he wanted to protect it and that he has respect for it. This paragraph within the introduction of “The Scarlet Letter” is essential for the establishment of the plot. In this paragraph, the author identifies one of the key symbols within the story: the scarlet letter A that Hester Prynne wears upon her bosom. Assuming that this paragraph was not included within the Custom House Introductory, the reader would not be able to identify the inspiration behind “The Scarlet Letter”. Additionally, the reader would not understand the reason behind creating a story based around something as arbitrary as a red letter A. Even though this paragraph creates a basic understanding as to the origin of the scarlet letter, some information is still left out.…

In this essay we’ll be exploring the different symbols found in William Faulkner's “A Rose for Emily”. The “rose” in the title, Emily’s house, the hair found on the bed, Emily's watch, the lime to cover up the smell, and the arsenic used to kill homer are all pieces that have a deeper/symbolic meaning to them. When the town's Aldermen came to Emily's house on the matter of collecting taxes, Faulkner specifically made the reader direct their attention to the the ticking pocket watch that is hidden within Emily’s clothes symbolizing the overall theme of the passage, time. Time is progressing ,everyone is aware of the changes going on around them and susceptible to theses changes except Emily. One theme in the passage that may be associated with a larger theme is that equality runs deeper than color. To elaborate, Atticus, throughout the passage, discourages the belief that all people are created equal in every respect, in terms of skill or opportunity. However, he emphasizes that all people should be treated with respect, no matter the scenario, and everyone should attempt to improve themselves; In terms of rights, there should be no bias, whatsoever. The author utilizes the impressionable children observing the people of Maycomb to further emanate his point.…

Although Capote constructs Holcomb as an idyllic, blissful place, there is a shift from the safe, untroubled town to a paranoid untrusting society; therefore, conveying the idea that events such as murders can disrupt even the most serene of places. The murders changed everything, consuming the town, obliterating everything known. Capote makes this clear with metaphorical references using a fire torching the Clutter’s belongings to portray the destruction caused by the deaths of the highly regarded Clutter household. Fire, a symbol of destruction, torches the Clutter’s belongings and everything ordinary about the insignificant town of Holcomb, Kansas: “They acquired additional fuel for the impending fire--blood-soiled bedclothes, mattresses,…

After Atticus is assigned to defend Tom Robinson, an African American, Scout asks him why is he doing something people say he shouldn’t be doing. In his own words, “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town…” (75). This shows that regardless if people think Atticus is doing the wrong thing, he still does it because it’s something a respectful man would do. He shows consideration for everybody.…

Next, Tim Johnson is another symbol that Harper Lee uses in her book. Through him, Harper Lee symbolizes the prejudice and racism of Maycomb County and Atticus is called upon to take care of both. Heck Tate says, “Take him, Mr. Finch” as he hands over the gun to Atticus (Lee 126). In a way, this is like when Judge Taylor chose Atticus to defend Tom. The poem, “We Wear the Mask” and the novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird” teach similar lessons. First of all, in the poem “We Wear the Mask” the characters, the mask, the people, and the world relate to one another. The mask represents how people hide who they are and their feelings. People are scared of showing themselves because of how harsh and judgemental the world is. This poem shows how people are afraid of showing themselves and in the end they still hide who they are, even though it hurts to do so.…

Atticus, in contrast to many other characters in the novel, does not accept the institutionalized racism that is entrenched into Maycombian society. Instead, he fights racial prejudice because he views it as fundamentally flawed and stemming from a lack of empathy and understanding for those outside one’s social group. Furthermore, Atticus’ emotional investment in Tom Robinson’s case shows the personal level on which racism affects him. When discussing with Scout why he was defending Tom Robinson, Atticus explained, “… every lawyer gets a case at least once in his life that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess.”…

"Yeah, but Atticus aims to defend him. That 's what I don 't like about it." This exemplifies how the town resented Atticus for simply doing what he believe to be the right thing to do; which is why even though Atticus had no intention of influencing the town’s idea of justice for Tom Robinson, he influenced the white community, who just so happen to have been the ones to decide Tom’s fate. This once again proves that while unintentional a single individual how the power to alter or change what another person perceives as…

Atticus perseveres through his problems and acts upon his role in society, to do what is right. He explains to Scout that “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win…” (76) Atticus is a remarkable man because he defends Tom Robinson in the case even though he knows that in society at the time, when it’s a black man’s word against a white man’s, the white man always wins. He represents a light in a time of darkness because even when most people neglect to defend what is morally correct, he fights for the Negro citizens and tolerates the insults and shame he continually faces. When Scout talks about a book that Atticus read to her, she tells him about a misunderstood character who “was real nice” and didn’t do anything wrong even if people thought he did and Atticus tell her that “Most people are…when you finally see them.” (281) Atticus refers to Boo Radley because while he knew about Boo and respected him staying in the house all the time, most people assumed the worst and let their ignorance interfere with the truth.…
