Rome’s Public Baths and Chinese Royal Bath Bathing is an important daily activity in a human’s life. Before I took the architecture history class, I knew that the public baths are popular in Japan and South Korea because most residential houses in these two countries are too small to have a bathroom. When I study the Rome architecture history this semester, the history of the Roman baths surprised me. The unique structure of the baths reminds me that a bathing ruin I went before in Xian, China. China also had some gorgeous baths construction in ancient, but mostly they were built for the emperor’s family. The Roman baths and Chinese baths are very different; however, the social history and technique between these two countries are obvious.

The water into the baths of Caracalla came from aqueduct system. The Romans excelled at building aqueducts because they achieved high levels of technology and science at that time. They borrowed and absorbed the culture of the Mediterranean basin; also, the environment of the political helped Rome’s innovation. The ordinary people in Rome can afford to go to the bath so that public baths were popular in Rome. According to Wikipedia, the editor writes, “Emperor Caracalla had the complex built as a piece of political propaganda, he wanted the public to like him and he also wanted something for the people to remember him by” (p. 2). The history fact shows that Emperor Caracalla was succeeded to make folks remember him. He shared his ideas to the country. The purpose of Roman’s emperor is different from Chinese emperor. Moreover, Chinese baths were popular in noblemen.
