Atticus Finch (a white man) defended Tom. Atticus states, “This case is as simple as black and white.”(271). Tom Robinson was on trial and Atticus was pleading his case. This explains that this case is plain black over white. Its black word vs. white and white usually wins. This also explains that is case is clear/obvious. Atticus Finch indicates that is unethical to assume that Tom Robinson is guilty because he is black and the man who accused him of raping his daughter is white. “There is something in our world that makes men lose their heads---they couldn’t be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins. They’re ugly, but those are the facts of life,” stated Atticus…

He knew that he was fighting for his life in that court case, and he was not going to die knowing he told a lie. Tom wanted to tell people the absolute truth, even if nobody believed him. For these three reasons, Tom is innocent.…

Essentially, Tom knows that if he stands there while Bob Ewell walks in, he will be killed in a heartbeat and nothing will be done about it. In support of this racism, Atticus says, “…absence of any corroborative evidence, this man was indicted on a capital charge and is now on trial for his life” (Lee 270). The whole town of Maycomb knows that Tom Robinson never received a fair trial to begin with. Tom is sentenced to death before he even walked foot into the courtroom. The jury convicts him of rape with no substantial evidence to support the ruling.…

Another piece of evidence can be found on page 205, where Atticus Finch makes a powerful speech during the courtroom scene, and states, ¨Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal.¨ This quote had Atticus trying to convince the jury that they should not come to a decision based on the fact that Tom Robinson was black, but rather on the substantial evidence. He says this because he knows that the jury had a tendency to rule against the black man at all times because of his different color. They do not review every single piece of evidence, this causes Tom to be sentenced to prison without even committing a crime that…
