Like many millennials, I use social media as a means of entertainment as well as an educational resource. No doubt, social media sources like Facebook and Twitter have redefined how people communicate and interact with the world. With the dawn of these revolutionary platforms, people are living and interacting in a microcosm brimming with 7.5 billion people. No longer does distance stifle an individual 's connection. Just ten years ago, I would have never imagined that communication would be driven by reports that are 140 characters or less, viral shares, and 6-second videos watch by millions. As nurses and healthcare professionals, we can use these same social media outlets, to our advantage. Currently, nurses may use these sites for round the clock educational updates. So, I say, why not utilize them to help you land your dream job. To some readers, using social media in any context may elicit feelings of uncertainty and provoke anxious thoughts. At one time, not too long ago, I shared those very sentiments. However, after talking with nursing consultants and top-notch recruiters, my outlook regarding the stance of social media changed.

Typically nurses wouldn 't consider social media sites like Twitter, Linkedin, and Facebook as a vital source that can assist them in landing their dream job. Frequently, members of the healthcare community at large stress that the use of social media leads to negative consequences such as violation of a patient’s privacy or partaking in unprofessional conduct. However, these resources can be key in landing your dream job. Communication within the last ten years has changed dramatically. The days of newspaper advertisements have been replaced with web posts that can be shared by millions. The time of purchasing a newspaper and scouting minuscule posts have ended. Now all one needs is a smartphone, tablet, or computer with Internet access to search and apply for listed positions in a matter of minutes. Business cards and resumes have been traded for LinkedIn profiles. Notably, networking sites like Linkedin afford hopefuls the opportunity of presenting himself or herself to a global network. Thus, the probability of landing your dream job has increased considerably. Michael Lindsey a Physician and Advance Recruiter for Universal Health Services find candidates through the job boards, referrals, and predominantly with social media sites like Linkedin. During our interview, I inquired about what he was “looking for” or “stood out” in exemplary profiles.
