The 1960s were a time for change and liberalism. Many great political leaders were guiding the country in a new direction. People such as John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Martin Luther King Jr. were heading the charge. The United States was in a state of social unrest, because of the two wars that were being fought during this time. The Vietnam and Cold War were both at large in the 60s, and were definitely affecting not only the men and women fighting over seas, but everyone here at home too. Even though JFK was beloved by many and accomplished a lot while in office, his great reign came to an abrupt halt. He was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. I have especially come to a liking of the political side of the decade as well. I had many specific, pre-conceived notions about the 60s before this class had ever begun. Many of them were specific events that had occurred, such as the assassinations of Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Before this class, I had never necessarily looked into this particular decade in depth; however I did have a general idea of what went on. My perspective on this highly controversial topic is that politics in the 60s forever changed the way Americans live today. My personal opinion is that the 60s had to most significant political and spiritual change than any other decade is recent history. Anything from racial equality to the intense counter-culture movement, this decade reformed America into a nation unlike ever before. The younger generation of people started to go against the “status-quo.” They started to go against authority and stand up for what they personally believe in. To me, I believe that the political leaders gave these kids this sense of drive that they never knew they had. They influenced people to act upon ideas that they believed in, and try to better the nation with their actions.
