What Is The Role Of Pick And Roll In Basketball

Improved Essays
Pick and Role The pick and roll is one of the most well-known and basic plays in all of basketball. The pick and roll is executed between two players and these players are usually the point guard and the center. The point guard is the player that runs the team and is usually the smallest and quickest player on the team. The center is the player that lots of team run the plays through and is usually the largest and strongest player on the team. The most basic pick and roll is when the center sets a solid screen or a pick which blocks the opposing guard from defending while letting his own guard go around it. Now since the point guard is open the opposing center has to step up to stop it. At the same time this is occurring the center that set the screen has a clear path to the rim or at least has a mismatch with the smaller point guard. If this play is executed properly the pick and roll can be one of the most useful and most difficult plays to defend. …show more content…
For the pick and roll to work the two players have to be in synch. The center has to set a good screen meaning the center cannot move after the setting the screen which would cause the offensive foul and has to make sure there is no space between them where the opposing point guard can get through. The responsibility of executing a good pick and roll doesn’t go solely on the center; the point guard has to do his part in maneuvering around the screen fast enough that the opposing guard cannot get through but also slow enough that his center has enough time to set the screen. The pick and roll is a very important play that has been used for a long time to run a team

The concept traces back at least as far as the 1980s, when early advocates including Doug Moe and Don Nelson found success with innovative, perimeter-oriented lineups that had little use for traditional low-post players. Nelson in particular made a career of his distinctive Nellie Ball style, building a Hall of Fame coaching résumé over three decades with the Bucks, Warriors and Mavericks. Other teams have experimented with small-ball through the years with varying degrees of success, but nearly all of them shared a common weakness: poor defense. The Warriors are having none of that. Though their small lineups put up video game numbers offensively, they do so without much trade-off defensively.…

A athlete position coach will always just done there throat because there stance makes them slow off the ball. A defensive lineman that wants to be the best at his position, it will be important to him to get their stance correct. If their stance is good then it is easier to come off the ball because being fast off the ball is also a good way to becoming a great lineman. The stance is a big key on the line of scrimmage because just lining up anywhere isn’t going to help you in anyway because two players do not want to meet each in the same gap and that makes another gap open for any backs to run through. If all players are line up correctly into their gap then there would not be any place the quarterback or running back to go inside of and the offensive losses yards because the defense is lined up…

I have also helped other people by teaching them how to play basketball, for example I taught my friend how to shoot a basketball more efficiently. I thought him this by watching videos and learning from them. My friend believed his way was right because every coach and even NBA players have taught kids how to shoot like that.…
