In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the four main characters each demonstrates varying leadership styles, to which all come with benefits and drawbacks. Ralph, the elected Chief, more prudently exemplifies this claim. His natural leader-like qualities and attractiveness, along with good morals and common sense are traits that sustain Ralph’s power over the group throughout the first half of the novel. However his inability to properly exert his authority and failure to relate to the rest of the boys eventually diminish his already decrepit influence over the group within the second half.
