I knew that the issue of income inequality always exists in America, but I never knew that it is so problematic. After reading the essays written by different authors, my feelings is that there is really no solution to solving this issue. If there was, then income inequality would have perished decades ago. In chapter one, Winship focuses on economic growth and income inequality. When he states that “countries with more inequality experience weaker recoveries from recessions” (Winship, 2014, p. 5), I agreed. The reason America’s economy have not really recover from the Great Depression is because of the existence of income inequality. Also through his studies, he shows that there is a negative relationship between economic growth …show more content…
I think that it is common sense that the fewer earners in a household, the more likely that the family will fall into the lower quintiles. On the other hand, the more earners in the household, the less likely those people will fall into the lower quintiles. This is a result of a measured increase in income inequality. Another factor that I believe causes the rise of income inequality is gender inequality. Studies show that “30 percent of female households without a husband are living in poverty. In contrast, only 7 percent of married couples and 17 percent of male households without a wife are poor” (Roth, 2014, p. 13). Although all men are created equal as the Declaration of Independence states, there is still an income difference between a male and a female. This brings in gender inequality, and the gist is that there is a big gap between single females who are poor and single males who are poor. This is because males have a higher income rate than female and the unequal opportunity where males have a better chance of getting a job than …show more content…
Many studies were conducted and some are verified to be good ways to measure income inequality in the U.S. America is a very stratified society, therefore people can easily classify themselves in the class they believe they belong in. In general, from reading this document, I have learned views of how people see and think about income inequality in the U.S. Hopefully, there will be enough people to know about this issue so something can be done about
