How Does Montresor Kill Fortunato

“The Cask of Amontillado” is yet another classic grotesque short story written by Edgar Allen Poe set in an unnamed Italian city during carnival time. It depicts a story of two men, Montresor and Fortunato, which according to the narrator have already had a prior bind. It begins very slow, leaving the reader clueless to the intentions of the narrator. Then as the story draws to an end, it takes a sharp turn towards gruesome and twisted as Montresor beings to murder Fortunato. Montresor plasters Fortunato into a vault with no hesitation. Montresor laid each brick one by one until Fortunato’s eventual death. As if the story couldn’t be any weirder, the reader then finds out that the narrator is actually Montresor fifty years removed from the crime. He is an almost perfect target of Montresor’s treacherous revenge. Along with the aid of his addiction to wine, Fortunato is extremely vulnerable to Montresor and totally blind to the fact that he is clearly angry with him. Montresor repeatedly tells Fortunato the he can bring his friend Luchesi to taste the Amontillado instead, but Fortunato’s pride and greed stand in his way. Fortunato responds to Montresor’s remarks saying, “Luchesi, he cannot distinguish sherry from Amontillado.” Fortunato couldn’t stand the thought of another man getting his hands on the Amontillado. Either his greed or his pride of thinking he was a connoisseur of wine aided this statement. This same pride seemed to be a reoccurring theme for Fortunato throughout the story and even leading up to his death. Fortunato also trusted Montresor throughout the story. He did whatever Montresor asked, including following him to his house and creepy catacomb.
