Creon values principles above all else. In Creon’s speech as king for the first time, he discusses the deaths of his two nephews, former king Etocles and Polyneices. Polyneices had created an army to betray his homeland on an attempt to capture his brother’s kingdom, they both fought gallantly and died in combat, Creon then states in his speech that no one is to touch the traitor Polyneices, and Etocles is to be buried with respect, he then later proclaims, “These are my principles, at any rate, that is why I have made the following decisions”(Sophocles 945). No matter what Creon actually thought, principles are how he made his “decisions.” Principles are what Creon lives by, no matter how he feels about the subject, he always makes the correct…

and he’d also be an obedient servant; and he’d stay at his post even in the hurricane of war, honourably, bravely defending his country.” Despite being portrayed as the antagonist of the play, Creon did have somewhat of a good reason behind his actions and words. Creon was indeed the ruler of Thebes and like all rulers, must think for what’s best for the people. He did not bury Polyneices’ body simply because he had a vendetta against him, but he did so because Polyneices was a traitor to Thebes. Creon, being a ruler of a kingdom, not only has immense power but does also have immense responsibilities which he must follow.…

The first reason why Creon acted correctly is that he was showing that no one could break the law. He showed that even his family and females , Polynices, Ismene, and Antigone, would be punished. An example of this in modern times would be if the President of the United States sister killed someone. She would not get away with it and she would be punished. Creon showed this equality by not letting Polynices get buried, and not sparring Antigone.…

In order to demonstrate this, Sophocles presents a situation in which a woman is willing to go to the extremes, even facing death, in order to fight for what she believes is right. The play struggles with the idea of right versus wrong, the characters are forced to make decisions based on their conscience even if it does not coincide with the law. The purpose of laws is to set a standard of conduct for the population to follow; usually these laws are for the good of the citizens who are living in the country.…

Oedipus was swift with action and had courage that could last a life time, while Creon was simplistic in nature and had a good head on his shoulders. Both kings, however had character flaws of stubbornness, as one tried to change and outrun his fate, while the other could not see past his nose, unable to make the right changes at the right time. As both were unable to change their ways in time, it led to the end of their legacies, one with death, and another with a life of loneliness.…
