Reflective Essay On Fahrenheit 451

In the Expository Reading and Writing course, we read Fahrenheit 451 as a whole class. We took notes on the different themes and/ or characters while reading the book. Both themes were in forms of questions and I chose to answer this question: Are we happy or just distracted? I chose the theme about happiness and distractions because I thought that it was very realistic and connected to the real world. To answer the question, we were assigned to write an analytical essay. To analyze means to look at a quote and find a deeper meaning. The main idea of the essay is that the characters in the book are not happy and their society is distracting them. The main idea is meaningful because it can actually reflect how people deal with happiness.

Along with the different types of writing we also took different steps to write the essay. First, we read the book, obviously. We took annotated while we read the book. Once we were done with the book we started to write TIED paragraphs and then we started to write the first draft. The leadership skill that I used was Thinking Critically. During my time writing I used the skill Thinking Critically to annotate for the theme that I was planning on answering. There were different examples of the theme in the book so I had to read and think about whether or not they supported the question. I also used this skill when writing my first essay during the timed writing. It wasn’t much what I wrote but I at least had 2 paragraphs done. I used this skill by thinking of how to start of my essay with an introduction paragraph. Another way I used the skill Thinking Critically was when I revised my paper. I was absent during the day that there was peer revisions so I was off track. I did it for homework though, to revise my own paper and fix anything that I thought needed to change.
