Purpose of Film

Typically not one to show films in class, I believe that this film does an excellent job of showing the real, visceral image of what life as a slave in the south was truly like. I believe it connects students to a deeply personal and true account of slave life. It is my intention to allow students to grow a greater appreciation for the sacrifices, hard work, and inhuman circumstances that African Americans in the pre-Civil War United States were forced to bear.

The film itself is very true to form in showing the

Why is it important to document hidden histories? Before viewing Slavery by Another Name (2012), I was not fully aware of the atrocities committed against African Americans after slavery had been abolished. I knew that newly freed slaves had a hard time adjusting to freedom, but I never fathomed the oppression and torment they were subjected to as free Americans. My history classes throughout my education never included information regarding involuntary servitude and laws that were created to deliberately re-enslave African Americans and prevent them from having mobility.…

The film I reviewed for my rhetorical analysis was the documentary Thirteenth (13th). This documentary uses many methods to show the viewer how the oppression of African Americans has evolved overtime since slavery. Thirteenth was directed by Ava Duvermay, who is a well-known director that produced other renowned films such as Selma. The documentary was produced by Ava DuVermay, Howard Barish, and Spencer Averick. This film does a great job of using notable speakers, pictures and facts to explain to the viewers how African Americans are still being oppressed today.…

Looking at our nation’s history, the slave population consisted of a majority of African Americans. As a result, an outcome of the civil war came to be the 13th amendment. The 13th amendment has been one of the most influential yet impacting amendments that has been passed in this country. President Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in 1865 to get rid of the racism that existed and ending the cruel behavior against African Americans. Though the amendment was passed, it did not apply to everyone, many of the victims of slavery were still harassed.…

Throughout the book, 12 Years A Slave, the author Solomon Northup decided to share his memoir. Northup gives an illustration via his book describing how his rights as a man were stripped away after being born and raised a freeman in the northern states; Saratoga, New York. The book describes deceivements, which subjected black men into slavery. Black men were sold as property to white plantation owners to do the grueling work and suffer punishments as their owners saw fit. Slavery is appalling and even today those practices of deceivement still work; although, nowadays those practices are not used specifically for slavery they are nonetheless cruel and illicit.…

My reaction to part 3 of this film is very different from the previous films because this one is much more brutal and there was so much going on. The whole film kind of revolved around the life of Harriet Jacobs who in the 1850s was the first woman to write a slave narrative and reveal the awful truth of slavery and although it was legal to teach slaves to read and write, her first owner taught her. What was significant about her story to me was when she talked about how “beauty was a curse”. No matter if your dark skin or light skin if you had beauty it would be a weapon against you because then your master would come after you. Being raped and constantly sexually assaulted by your master was no only crazy, perverted, and dehumanizing…

12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup is an important novel. It should be a requirement for all students taking any United States history course to read this novel because it not only lets readers gain an understanding of the harsh reality of slavery, but also gives them a basis for understanding the widespread racism that resulted from it. Northup’s story is one that can be completely eye-opening to the plight of African slaves on southern plantations in the nineteenth century. Northup is able to describe his horrendous twelve year long experience with slavery, and bring to light, better than anyone else, the terrible time in history that was American slavery. Because of this, I am really glad that 12 Years a Slave is a part of the english curriculum.…
