Satire In High Schools Essay

High school students all go through the same problem: finding themselves. According to most, getting involved with clubs, having a social life, and taking the recommended AP courses would essentially make the students fit the standard of what a highschool student needs to be. But is it really necessary to go through the trouble? Would doing all of these things really help the students find themselves?
The purpose of our satire is to show how the typical highschool standard of joining clubs, being active socially, and taking a bunch of AP classes is ridiculous because everyone’s different. Both videos state “But obviously, nothing ever works out for Kalton.” This is an understatement because the actual meaning is Kalton’s life sucks. It has irony because nothing ever goes accordingly for Kalton. It also parodizes the club Key Club by using Lock club.Inflation is used because Kalton’s life sucks in reality, but in the story, it sucks even more. There’s an obvious exaggeration as Kalton’s bad luck is exaggerated. Lastly, there’s diminution because the amount of significance clubs and love life actually has on Kalton is quite low. In the Horatian version, there’s also surprise because the audience expected Kalton to die, but he came back to life. In the Juvenalian version, there’s invective as the video starts off with Kalton’s classmates as they insult Kalton for being a “fob,” an abbreviation for “fresh off the boat” which is a derogatory term that refers to recent immigrants. We decided to use these devices because they all are able to emphasize how much Kalton’s life sucks. The surprise helps the Horatian version with adding a twist to the ending, making it light.
