What Is The Purpose Of Colin Powell's Speech Organized?

Improved Essays
The Ted speaker that I chose to watch was Colin Powell, he was fantastic, entertaining and informative all at the same time. For me, it was a rarity to watch a speaker that had all the above-mentioned qualities. The way he engages with the audience showed me many things about public speaking that that I never recognized one needed until watching this video. I love how he opens his speech in a relaxed, funny, and joking manner. He begins by divulging something personal about himself (it does help that he is already a known public figure) , something that the audience is already aware of, which piques the audiences interest, but does it in a joking manner. What I thought worked really well in his introduction was the way he used the kids from different low income- one parent households to make a statement about how important it is to start off a kid the right way even before birth. I love how he uses one powerful word in his introduction, the word “structure “which defines the overarching theme throughout his speech.

• How is the speech organized? Does it flow smoothly?
The speech came off as being very organized as he seemed to have his introduction in place, time and a place for a joke, smooth delivery into the main part of the speech and then concluding by restating the purpose of his speech. In addition, you can tell how the

One day in the very near future the citizens of the USA that are considered a majority will one day be a minority. Therefore, those who are currently minorities need to be prepared to take leadership roles and there is no better way than for parents of the minorities to begin raising their kids with structure at an early age. He states that after so many decades in the army and government he has realized that what the youth of this country or more specifically the minority youth are missing is,

I really enjoyed the guest speaker, Cathleen Morgan and was quite impressed with her forsaking aspect of being on the board of education. She gave a new insight on the idea that we are no longer a minority and majority school district. Whites were truly the minority, of which 35% are Hispanics and 15% are black. The idea that teaching with these numbers is extremely hard to do and is a challenge. The challenge of experiencing a certain culture and gaining a new culture at the same time.…

When I mentioned the lack of African American managers throughout the workforce he was stunned, but he became more astonished once he discovered the appalling numbers of minority CEOs leading Fortune 500 companies. When we discussed how the lack of leadership positions occupied by minorities would affect the future prospects for African American managers, there was a little hesitation to say that the lack of strong mentors had an overwhelming negative impact on the future development of African American leaders. As a child not having a father around had an impact on him and he had to look for mentors outside the home. Similarly, African Americans have few top level leaders to look at for guidance and inspiration. He was quick to point out that although some will use this as an excuse, he overcame similar circumstances by not having a father, however, he still believes that more black leaders are necessary for the overall inclusion of African Americans in the…

His structure was very vast, contained a lot of parts, he opened with why he was there, and his acknowledgment of the wrongdoing that is happening in Germany. He then proceeded to state different countries, and their stances of freedom, almost comparing them to Germany. The rest of the speech is him relating to Germany, telling them what should be changed and getting defensive in the way of taking down the wall. The tone is almost tense, and overly scripted. I believe he was trying to hard to top JFK’s speech, and he delivered the speech as Berlin’s pain was winding down, which seems sort of shameful to Reagan,…

I think that his intentions with the speech are to clarify and, like I said earlier, to motivate the audience, and make them believe that they can do it, if they work for it. In the end he says, “people don’t expect the government to solve all their problems”, so he talks on behalf of them, which makes them unite and unconsciously agree with him. In that way I think his intentions worked pretty well, and that people really did feel inspired, because he related to them with his story, like I know I…
