In today’s world we often associate a younger person as being smart, efficient, and productive. Older adults are viewed as helpless, inefficient, and mentally and physically slow. As a result of this mentality, older adults are often either intentionally or unintentionally discriminated against. This discrimination can cause older adults to be deprived of their self-dignity, self-worth, and job. To show the prevalence of this discrimination, Figure 1 displays how many adults feel as though they have experienced age discrimination in the workplace. This discrimination comes from societal views and stereotypes about older adults; however, these negative thoughts have not always been in society. Branco and Williamson said that in the past older
