The United States claims to have equality and freedom of expression, but many citizens have experiences in their day to day life that would disprove this said claim. What people most often neglect to recognize is the lack of equality that lies within expression of love. When someone is transgender, homosexual or even attracted to a different race they are at risk. That is why so many people are afraid to come out. They do not just end up coming out with their sexual preference, but they surrender their social validation as well. Oftentimes people will feel hopeless when expressing their sexual or even racial preference. Everyone's story is different. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Mr. Dolphus Raymond explains to Jem, Scout and Dill why he sacrifices his own image to please the people of Maycomb: “It ain’t honest but it’s mighty helpful to folks. Secretly, Miss Finch, I’m not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live like I do because that’s the way I want to live” (Lee 268). Dolphus Raymond pretends to have a drinking problem as an excuse to loving his African American wife and biracial children. Due to the fact that he is a white man, he has to hide his true self through drinking for people to be less harsh on his dating life. Father of white daughter from the film Prom Night in Mississippi comments on her black boyfriend; “She's never been on a date with him. That's my choice. It's not hers, because I have a little control still. I'm still the parent” (qtd. in Prom Night n.pag.) Although in this situation the daughter is not hiding from the fact that she is in a interracial relationship she still has to face harsh judgement daily from her own father.
