In Duhigg’s book, he explains craving by showing the readers the experiment with Julio the monkey. Julio the monkey was an experiment to show how craving plays a role in habits. Julio was given the task of pulling the lever when he saw a shape on the computer screen, when this task was done he was rewarded with blackberry juice (which he loved). During the whole time Julio was doing the experiment, scientist were recording his brainwaves and found something shocking. When Julio started the experiment his brainwaves would spike up when he obtained the juice (which indicated his pleasure). How can people change their nasty habits into good habits. Well, in the book Duhigg explains the “Golden Rule”, which tells the reader to keep the cue and reward the same but to change the routine. An example is my smoking habit, I should keep my cue (hanging out with friends) and reward (socializing with my friends) but should change the routine (smoking). But what should I change my habit into so that I can still hang out with my friends? Well since me and my friends love playing basketball together, I think I should play a game of pickup basketball with them instead of smoking cigarettes with them. This will allow us to still socialize with each other while still keeping our minds off of cigarettes. I think this is a great plan because we get exercise and still get to enjoy each other’s company. But in stressful time this will be hard to keep up and I hope that we are still able to stop smoking.

Duhigg explains in his book that we must have belief in something bigger than ourselves or have a support group. These two factors will help a person to overcome a stressful time and retain their good habits. Belief in God will help me to overcome this habit because we all believe in God and it will help us see the bigger picture. That we are stronger than smoking
