The book “A thousand splendid suns”, is a story that revolves around two female protagonists, Mariam and Laila. A story also about the power of education. Both of the girls’ lives are full of great and great hope. Although they grew up in similar conditions, they were each informed different things growing up. Mariam’s and Laila’s parents had different views on education. The text states “ It’s a lot in our life, Mariam. Women like us have to endure. It’s all we have. Do you understand? Besides, they will laugh at you in school.” Nana has told Mariam that she would be made fun of if she went to school. This tells us that Mariam was not allowed to go to school. Meanwhile, Laila was encouraged to go to school by her father.
