Mandy reclaiming her sexuality and using it as a weapon is a complete departure from the horrors of Halloween where one sexual encounter can lead to your demise. From damsel in distress to revenge killing, female characters in slasher films have been able to reclaim what was once deemed improper and use it as a means of survival. Binary gender roles, and their perceived differences, are very prevalent in most cinema, but perhaps none are so stark and telling as those in torture porn. In his article, “The Problem of Saw: ‘Torture Porn’ and the Conservatism of Contemporary Horror Films”, Christopher Sharrett describes the role of the predatory captor as it relates to gender.1 Males almost always occupy the role, playing the part of vigilante as a “cruel but necessary father” who believes it is his duty to teach his moralities to his victims (34). Lockwood also points out voyeurism as a key characteristic of male captors, drawing attention to the focus the films give to the captor spying on the intended victim before their capture in some torture porn films (43).2 When…

In this essay, I will analyze how Clover uses female characters in horror films to display the visible adjustment in terms of gender representation through her various examples in slasher movies. Slasher films invite and target a male audience to identify with the female protagonist. Clover defines slasher films as, “The immensely generative story of a psycho killer who slashes to death a string of mostly female victims, one by one, until he himself is subdued or killed, usually by the on girl who has survived” (195). This “female victim-hero”, who has survived the raft of the villain, is known as the Final Girl.…

The Oversexualization of Women in Modern Media There is a stark difference between being sexual and being sexualized. Men are permitted to be sexual, but are not oversexualized in media. Inversely, women are permitted to be sexualized in media, but are prohibited from being sexual. Having said that, the sexualization of women in media creates boundaries for women that men do not face, and impacts the cognitive development and mental health of women. The tendency to oversexualize women is a very “western” or “first world” occurrence (North America/Canada/Europe/Developed Countries), and is influenced by modernization and the availability of technology and media.…

Femininity and masculinity are very strong themes in both films but is misunderstood in various ways because of the gender roles and relationships sustained throughout the film. Masculinity is the possession and qualities of a man and this is shown in many ways. Femininity is also shown in the films in many ways where the qualities of women both contrast and differentiate. In Taming of the Shrew, masculinity is portrayed as having much wealth, being physically strong, having dominance, facial hair and being charismatic. Masculinity in 10 Thing I hate about you is similarly portrayed however a “man” doesn’t need facial hair, instead he needs to be blatantly sexual towards women.…
