In the story the character personality is cold, ruthless, and obsessed with revenge. In the text it states, “You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat. At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitively settled—but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved, precluded the idea of risk”(page 58). Furthermore the story mainly focuses on wanting revenge and Montresor planned out the perfect crime showing his intelligent personality. The character, Montresor is an unreliable character because he doesn’t gives us all access to what is going on in his mind but only snips and pieces. Montresor establish in the story that,“The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge”(page 58). In addition, Montresor throughout the story doesn’t tell all the specific details the readers want to know when reading the story. From beginning to the end of the story, the feeling of the narrator isn’t necessarily pointed out but in the end, the readers are left questioning. The narrator’s feelings are stated in the text, “Against the new masonry I re-erected the old rampart of bones. For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them. In pace requiescat!”(page 64).
