8. Sociological research finds that education and skills play a role but do not fully explain the placement of some ethnic groups in a particular job queue. This is because employers emphasize a preference for “soft skills,” which create a potential for bias in decision-making in the workplace (Race, Ethnicity, and the American Labor Market: What’s at Work?, p. 4). This bias is used when employers determine that certain people have skills that other groups of people do not have. For example, an employer can believe that white people can do an activity better than black people. Also, the creation of ethnic niches affects the availability and desirability of the job (Race, Ethnicity, and the American Labor Market: What’s at Work?, p. 5).
