“In reading, a lonely, quiet concert is given to our minds; all our mental faculties will be present in this symphonic exaltation.”- Stéphane Mallarmé. I didn’t really enjoy reading until sixth grade when my teacher recommended I read The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. I found this whole other world where I could relate to book and I loved that people weren’t riding dragons or making uncanny potions, it was genuine. So I went to the library the next day and went to the Realistic Fiction section and it’s been my genre ever since. Reading to me means an escape into a world where my complications don’t matter, where I learn something different, and where I have more experiences that can be gathered in a lifetime.

You live several lives while reading it.” - William Styron. While reading I’ve been an artist, surfer, orphan, explorer, pirate, pianist, runaway and a teenager. While reading I’ve been to Alaska, Canada, Afghanistan, New York, Washington D.C., London, Cuba, Egypt, and Italy. While reading I’ve been back paging through Europe, walked with Martin Luther King, forced into a new civilization, sailed the ocean blue with Columbus in 1492, felt heartbreak with Hazel Grace Lancaster, and experienced a life with no color or sentiment.
“I love to read. That doesn’t mean I don’t have a life. It doesn’t mean I’m a nerd. I only love the feeling that … even when you’re back in reality you still feels like you’re in a different world.” – S.A. When I’m reading I get swept up into a world where I express the emotions of the narrator and I forget everything around me. I feel like I can jump into the book and live there, and then when it ends I find a new place to live. Reading is my safe place where I’m lost in an entanglement of words. Books are my

“The House was Quiet and the World was Calm” describes how I feel when I am home alone. With the house to myself, I am free from the noise of the blaring T.V, constant ringing and vibrating of cell phones, and loud voices. It is then when I usually pursue activities that require quiet, usually reading or relaxing. The sense of peace that overcomes me as I am alone in the house allows for intense focus.…

How to Live and Why : Connecting Individuality in Bloom’s and Dickinson’s Work To live and to read share undeniable similarities. In life, the same principles that are applied to daily actions and decisions should be considered when reading. The importance of individuality and the necessary process of strengthening oneself, even the benefit of a degree of selfishness, are themes that appear throughout How to Read and Why by Harold Bloom and “I Stepped from Plank to Plank” by Emily Dickinson. Harold Bloom’s thesis is that how and what one reads has to be distinctly personalized to themselves; because of our constant race against the clock, reading needs to be for the individual alone. Dickinson enforces this idea of solitary exploration and…

“A reader lives a thousand lives before they die… the one who never reads lives only one.¨ - George R.R. Martin When I found this quote I knew this was the one because he is right. Whenever you read a good book it is like you are living the main character´s life. The written language is one of the main reasons that we are the dominate species on the planet. Reading is extremely important because reading boosts our creativity and imagination; it also helps us understand our world and other worlds at a deeper level. It is also one of if not the most important skills you can acquire in this day and age.…

In The Life of Poetry, Muriel Rukeyser exposes the human race on our lack of reading engagement. She has seen far too many refuse to have their soul touched by the stories writers and poets slaved over to give us. We have chosen to become passive, to just read to finish, to read without witnessing what the author has brought to the forefront. In her eyes, literature is the “insisting of discovery” (Rukeyser 194). It is to lead us into the unknown and shed light on what we currently do not see.…

"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one" - George R.R Martin, A Dance with Dragons. Humans are such sensitive beings and it is very difficult to understand how people have become impassive to experiences nowadays. It is almost as if they believe that being unsusceptible is a quality that one should possess in today’s world. I speak this because nowadays importance is being given to things like technology and partying etcetera which is good to an extent but due to this books, novels, poems, literature and art are taking a backseat.…

Besides, being able to envision a new world and liberate oneself from worries, reading can also bring about a new perspective and form connections between different people. Such as being able to understand the main character’s thoughts and reasons behind the author’s point of view. Readers can then analyze the similarities between the points brought up by the books and real life situations occurring. Therefore, everyone should once in a while, pick up a book and read, finding themselves in a whole new light.…

As a third grader, I scarcely found pleasure in reading anything except books accommodating fairies. Otherwise, I couldn’t sit still long enough to get through the first chapter. Through school so far, we hadn’t done a significant amount of independent reading, but fourth grade was a fresh year with brand new expectations. I sauntered into fourth grade without a worry in sight, hoping to continue my weekly reads of The Rainbow Fairies. However, fourth grade wasn’t how I imagined.…

Who we are is determined by what we know, and what we know stems from what we have learned and what we have learned comes from that we have listened to, watched and most importantly, what we have read. It would be foolish to say that what we have read has not impacted the way that we live. Whether it is an idealistic young adult novel that teaches the readers to take a risk, or a depressing dystopian novel that teaches us to protect what we believe in and to not be afraid to question the world as we know it. Connecting to characters in a book is unavoidable. While you are reading a book you are cohabiting with the characters, celebrating their wins and mourning their loses, reading teaches you about empathy.…
