As I entered my senior year of undergrad, I began looking for an opportunity to work with people requiring any form of health care assistance. Luckily, I came across an opening for a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) position in the school newspaper. At the time, I didn’t know exactly what a PCA was, but I knew I wanted to work one-on-one with patients, and this job would allow me to do exactly that. The only details my supervisor told me about my client were: his name, that I would be assisting in driving him around in his handicap accessible van, getting him dressed, monitoring him during his walking exercises, and that he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy as a child and was bound to a wheelchair.…

A question that I asked was why a client had wanted and was really excited to have me paint her nails, then got really upset when I started to do it. After I asked this question to my supervisor I was told about all of the different happenings that were worrying her and that she just wanted to have one on one not nesaisarly for that reason (nail painting) but for company. I was confused until I found out about her medical history/background and how she was raised. Although I cannot share that information, it did however make me understand that sometimes the context/ environment someone is in can truly effect how an activity can be functional or even dysfunctional in a person’s therapeutic intervention. That is why occupational therapy being…
