This is because of the unnecessarily large amount of sugar, salt, and fat in it and the fact that most fast food menu items contain casein. In combination, sugar, salt, and fat cause the brain to release dopamine. Since there is so much sugar, salt, and fat in fast food the brain releases a lot of dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical in the brain that causes feelings of pleasure. As a result of this people can develop a craving or an addiction to fast food because they want to feel good. An addiction to fast food means that people will keep coming back for more. Also, fast food contains casein which is an addictive protein compound that is found in milk and cheese. Casein is addictive in the same way that salt, sugar, and fat are. When casein is consumed the brain releases dopamine, causing the “feel good” effect. The problem is that many fast food items contain milk-derived ingredients. As a result, casein can be found in fast food items such as french fries, sausages, buns, and salad dressings (Cardiff). Fast food does not cost much. Since there are fast food chain locations everywhere it is not too much of a hassle to try to find one. It is also food that people do not have to cook themselves. There may be a lot of high-calorie menu items, but there are some healthier options. Rather than getting an 880 calorie Bacon Deluxe from Wendy’s there is always the Asian Cashew Chicken which only contains 380 calories. Although there are some healthier options there are not many. It would get very annoying for people to have to eat chicken or a salad every time they would go out to eat at a fast food restaurant.
