My first step outside was refreshing, the gross heat of summer was not to be seen anywhere, instead a soft Greek breeze hit my skin and blew through my hair. The peaceful town of Kalambaka was still sleeping and quiet as we made our way down to the mountains. A brisk stroll later and we arrived at our destination, there it was, it felt so intimidating up close. The mountains had a slight purple undertone from the moonlight casting over it, I was beginning to doubt if I could scale the entire thing in one day. My group headed towards the mountain with determination written in their features, the base of the mountain was a nice hilly path, nothing too serious. That was until I reached the steep portion, and let me tell you, it was a living nightmare to climb. The steps were made of marble like material and they were very slippery, I fell about five times a minute and and saw my life flash before my eyes five times a minute. At the midpoint I was a sweaty, panting mess, I had already went through my waterbottle like it was the last pure water on earth. By this time the sun had begun to rise between the mountains, the view from between the dense population of trees was absolutely magnificent. Sturdy enough to hold all of us for a group photo and a panoramic picture of the now bright and raging sun. I felt like I was on the top of the world, weightless even, The view was like no other the moss covered mountain side, the quaint but lively city, and the sunrise made my stomach churn with happiness and excitement. I had done it, I had climbed a mountain the process was hard and tiring but I did it, and it was so worth it. The monastery was closed due to the early hour but the view made up for it, even overshadowing it. We headed down after a long time of seeing and admiring, the trip back down was much easier. There were some shady paths that some of the members took that seemed to be risky and dangerous. We found a mountain turtle, not important to the story but it was a cute turtle. At this time the shops were opening and the restaurants and cafes were preparing to invite customers in.
