For a lot of people, remaining still and quiet for an hour is difficult. The Franks, the Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel all had to do this - Except they had to do it for ten hours instead of one. Living in the secret annex, the families were very limited on what they could do throughout the day, due to the risk of being caught. Everything was extremely close together, and the only full privacy any of them got was in the tiny water closet. Nobody had his or her own bedroom, except for Peter, but his was hardly large enough. As well as cramped spaces, there was no shower or bath, so bathing was difficult and not an every night thing. Stacked on top of that, having to share nearly everything with people they hardly knew at first would have been a difficult adjustment. As you can see, the living conditions of the secret annex were poor.
It is obvious that Mr. and Mrs. Frank, Margot, Anne, Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, Peter, and Mr. Dussel had to go through a lot over those two years. However, the worst of it all was not the limitations or the living conditions. It was the anticipation. They never knew if or when they would get caught or if or when they would be freed. Many of them, especially Anne, suffered terrible nightmares of being exposed to the Nazis, air raids and patrols to be be the blame for much of it. It must have been awful living like that,
