We use slang in English to communicate effectively in an informal manner, and with some degree of humor. In Slang Origins by Woody Allen, the author explains how a variety of phrases became known as slang. Allen included stories of slang derived from marital customs and how the woman accepted or rejected the proposal, misunderstandings because of not being able to hear what someone else said properly, and ones that started because of something a single person did that was amusing. These origins stories sound foolish but I believe that the humor is what caused them to be passed down generations and remain prevalent in society today. Some of the origins of slang come from marital customs such as “got into a beef” or “to look down one’s nose”.…
That would account for what the animal did just now. Reacted towards me” (24). Lastly, the types of language and imagery helps the audience to actually visualize the characters and society. It helps with the reader’s knowledge and makes the novel more interesting which gives it that extra boost to make it more superior than other dystopian…
Writers use symbolism to strengthen their writing, making it more interesting and adding a layer of deeper meaning by adding key literary elements because it fills the story with excitement which makes it more fun for the reader. Most authors get an opportunity to utilize these literary devices to make each story his or her own like setting the tone, building the characters, and leading the reader through the journey of the authors mind. Likewise, the literary elements like imagery and syntax are used by the author to attempt to create a mental picture in the mind of the reader and syntax to help make inferences and draw conclusions about what the reader reads. In the short stories, Indian Education by Sherman Alexie and The Dew Breaker…
The author of a novel chooses specific words to use frequently throughout the story in order to get their message across to the reader. Mark Twain uses the nword to give the reader an understanding of set the setting of the story. Today, the nword is a racial derogatory term and is considered socially unacceptable to use in most situations, but Mark Twain incorporates the nword in his novel to show the reader how far society has come in the last fifty years. Pap tells Huck, “when they told me there was a State in this country where they’d let that nigger vote, I drawed out. I says I’ll never vote again . . .…

In Paul McHenry Roberts “How to say nothing in 500 words”, I was caught up by the colorfully words strategy. As I understand by his explanation using colorful words does not mean using literary colors to pen down words rather to get depth and meaning out of the message that is to be conveyed. Using these words would in turn help the reader formulate better the scene that the writer is trying to convey. This is an effective way of author to audience communication I personally find this one of the most important strategies that any writer should follow because, being a writer the main purpose that we are writing for is to get our thoughts, opinions our visions across to our chosen audience just the way we formed it in our head.…

One day Raphael finds something astonishing which is extremely valuable and changes his life and turns out to be a mixed blessing.…
In George Orwell’s 1984, the Party is trying to condense the human language, as demonstrated when Syme talks about the destruction of words and the eleventh edition of Newspeak. “We’re destroying words – scores of them, hundreds of them, every day… The eleventh Edition won’t contain a single word that will become obsolete…” (page 51) For example, words such as “fantastic” or “excellent,” are being eradicated from the entirety of human language; instead, citizens of Oceania use “good” if something is satisfactory, “plusgood” for better, and “doubleplusgood” for something exceptionally pleasing. Likewise, the citizens of Oceania are losing their concept of that word “bad;” if something is less than satisfactory, then something is considered to be “ungood.”…
The slang and words that are used in the text give a texturized verbal picture of Harlem and Harlem´s current situation. The strong tone can be heard when friends are having a conversation and even when the main character is thinking. The author does a great job avoiding using bad language, while he still maintains the characters and keeps them authentic. That makes them relatable and makes them come to life in the short story. The slang can be seen by the incorrect use of grammar and the incorrect word composition.…
Slang is often derived from old words with new meanings or completely new words with new meanings. Because of its unstructured nature, many linguists believe that slang is “lazy” English. Walt Whitman, the author of Slang in America, uses a variety of rhetoric devices to prove to the world, especially Americans, that slang is a useful and a necessary development to the English language by using an informative tone. When beginning his writing, Whitman uses a metaphor…

In writing poetry Billy Collins uses simple language to connect with the reader and convey a deeper meaning. This is done by his use of rhetorical question, relatable situations, and simple language. Billy Collins uses rhetorical question to connect with the reader and provoke deeper thought.
