What Is The Monologue In It's A Wonderful Life

Improved Essays
The monologue I performed is from the movie It’s a Wonderful Life directed by Frank Capra (Capra). The focus of the movie is on a young man named George Bailey, who lives in the small town of Bedford Falls (Capra). George’s dream is to leave Bedford Falls and become a world traveler. The day before George is supposed to get on a train and start his world travels, his father suddenly dies. His father was the owner of the Bedford Falls Building and Loans, so George has to go to the board meeting that is deciding the fate of his father’s business. Sitting in on the meeting is Mr. Potter, who was a rival with George’s father and always in competition with him. Mr. Potter is a corrupt, old man, who wants to take over the Building and Loans so he have complete control of the town. My monologue is when George is defending his father’s …show more content…
To give me inspiration on how I would perform my speech, I watched just the scene that Jimmy Stewart performed multiple times and noted certain actions he did show the character of George Bailey. Some of the actions I noted for example would be a slight stutter on certain words, his voice quivering or facial expressions when talking to Potter.Since I was unclear about the time period, I tried to find out when the original story had been written so I could understand the setting, but couldn’t find an exact year. The movie came out to theaters in 1947 so I assumed the timeline in the story would be around that time or a few years earlier. I practiced performing my monologue for considerable amounts of time leading up to the date of my performance until I was confident with it. To help me memorize my speech better, I would practice performing it with no script and each time I forgot a line or messed up, I would start over from the beginning. The night before my performance, I practiced for about half an

George’s grief over the loss of the Dream almost seems anticlimactic. However, the film portrays his sorrow vividly by focusing on George’s face as he rides alone in the train, accepting the emptiness of his life without Lennie. Another scene from the novel developing the theme of loneliness portrays Lennie having an imaginary conversation with his Aunt Clara. She berates him for doing bad things and tells him George will not let him tend the rabbits. This scene verges on melodrama.…

The leader of Albuquerque, Richard Berry made a discourse that can help a considerable measure of the significant urban areas all around if considered. While strolling not far off, he happened to run over a man that was holding a card board. There were words composed on it and after looking carefully he learnt that the man had been requesting help finding a vocation. He and his staff began a citywide activity that would see to it that the greater part of the destitute land positions and also places to rest. A great deal of the people tuning in to him named his discussion a blunt and idealistic one.…

To begin, the monologue I have chosen is written very literally with concise sentences. Correspondingly, the character (George) who I am playing has a very straightforward goal in his monologue. With this said, George is telling someone that he has a “personal beelzebub” who has taken his toes. Due to this, George reveals several goals all related to his toe taking beelzebub. George wants to get his toes back while not losing anymore to his personal beelzebub.…

“You’ll never leave” is carved faintly into the brick wall of the small jail cell, probably from its last guest. Every day, I started to believe the phrase more and more. I was extremely excited to watch Brooklyn College’s rendition of Speech and Debate. The reasoning behind my excitement was that whilst reading the play written by Stephan Karam, I quickly realized that it’s humor and authenticity were aspects that I typically enjoy to a great extent in stories, whether that be in the form of a television show, movie, or play. I also felt that I was readily prepared to watch the show meticulously and focus on its acting and casting aspects. I chose the acting facet of the production to be the focal point of my review yet again because I understand that I could have pushed further and been more detail oriented when writing my previous review. Brooklyn College’s Speech and Debate had a small cast of four actors.…

Distinguished citizens of excellent Verona. I, Friar Lawrence, a pious and sanctified man, confront you today to hereby inform you that, although I did the least, I am under the most suspicion and scrutiny, as I was the last witness prior to the murder. You may question and punish me, but I have already condemned myself and been forgiven (Act 5 Scene 3, 223-227). I have been accused of allowing illicit substances, and manslaughter of two people, however I have honestly and sincerely had pure intentions. A given instrumental performance exists as a gateway to the original work rather than being the work itself and as such a given performance is two works rather than one. In Thomas Mark’s Philosophy of Piano Playing: Reflections on the concept of Performance he makes the claim that a performance and a quotation are similar in concept, but performance requires an assertion. With the nature of assertion this account of a performance of an existing work becomes two works rather than one. However, while Mark is able to separate a performance from a quotation the nature of quotations greatly limits what constitutes a performance of a pre-existing work.…

Practice makes perfect as everyone has heard this saying before. In the future, I plan on practicing my speeches more by speaking in front of a mirror over and over again to give myself the impression of what I look like when speaking in front of a group of people. Practicing in front of a mirror over and over again will also help me memorize my speech more instead of relying on my note card as often, giving me more confidence while speaking. I tend to use my note card as a comforting thing when I get nervous and forget what I am about to say. It gives me the chance to collect my thoughts and remember what I was going to say as well as staying on track of where I was going in my speech.…
