Chapter five and six examine the metaphor inhaling and exhaling which is the breakdown of the communication process(Stewart, 2012). Communication is a extensive process that is multidimensional which means they are various forms of communication. Inhaling is refers to as the expressive part of communication (Stewart,2012).Perception and listening are the key components that are highlighted in chapter five. Perception is lasting therefore we must ensure to leave an lasting impression. Perception is a process where people make interpretations of mental cues (Stewart,2012). Perception is often used in conversation, interviews, and racially profiling.Perception allows an individual to see the big picture. This week I was able to gain insight about perception above the surface level. I have learned that perception is a technique that occurs through the physical senses such as sight, hearing, and smelling (Stewart,2012). For instance you are driving pass McDonald’s the smell of burgers and fries is strong you inhale the delightful senses which makes you hungry therefore you stop to buy the food it tastes as you imagine this is a form of perception. Senses are learned during the childhood years. As reading the text that perception is apart of the senses my first reaction un huh a light bulb came on at that moment.

Although majority of Harrison’s narration of trench warfare is described in chronological order, the description is given a sense of depth when the writing deviates from the sequence. For example, the writer describes a flashback to an event when he talks to veterans and reads newspaper reports. This gives depth because it gives insight to the characters current motivation and emotional state. Sense imagery paints a vivid portrait of a scene to develop the narrative with the use of words and in this case is used very effectively throughout the passage.…

What makes a good observation? When making an observation, one would need to gather enough information to be able to fully describe what was observed. The details gathered would cover all areas of the action observed: what was seen, heard, touched, tasted, how it made one feel and can the reader relate to what is being described. In The Old Man Isn’t There Anymore, Kellie Schmitt created an effective observation by using sensory details, appeal to the reader’s emotion using pathos, and relating her experience in China to experiences in the United States.…

When he begins to fall for his wife’s cousin who is helping out in the house during the midst of a cold depressing winter, she begins to turn it into a winter wonderland. Many aspects of the book lead up to the suicide attempt of Mattie and Ethan; it all starts with Mattie turning down Denis Eady and then Ethan kissing the cloth. When I walk past someone that is physically and mentally different than myself, I assume and judge; but my assumption is not always right because I haven’t been in their shoes to where I can completely fathom their situation. People tend to evaluate others harshly when they don’t know them personally. In “The Cathedral” by Raymond Carver, the husband has a hard time understanding the relationship between the wife and the blind man, Robert. Throughout the story, Carver shows us that assumptions interfere with the overall impression of a person and that audible communication increases understanding by using literary devices and elements of character. Carver gives the husband a straight but, aggravated tone which characterizes him as pessimistic…

Perception Perception is “the process by which individuals organize and interpret their impressions to give meaning to their environment.” , it is not necessarily a reflection of the objective reality of the situation (Langton, Robbins, & Judge, 2016, p. 38). There are three factors that contribute to perception, the individual or perceiver, the target or what they are perceiving and the attributes that are associated with the target, and the context or situation that the event occurs in (Langton, Robbins, & Judge, 2016, p. 38-39). Over the last 5 years, Electronics Shack has experienced substantial management and process changes or disruptions, as a result of repeated changes in leadership. Management and employees alike have developed different opinions, based on their perception, of what has happened within the company and what needs to happen now to get the company back on track.…

Listening is an important skill of interpersonal communication. It helps to develop good interpersonal relationships with others. While communicating with others it is important to listen to another person carefully to interpret his/her message properly and accurately. In this communication episode I have used different listening strategies, like selecting, attending, understanding, remembering and responding to communicate effectively. “Listening is defined as selecting, attending to, constructing meaning from, remembering and responding to verbal and non-verbal messages”( Beebe, Beebe, Redmond, Geerinck and Salem-Wiseman, 2015, p.113 ).…

Keeley Harris Kidd Theory of Knowledge February 16, 2015 “To what extent do our senses give us knowledge of the world as it really is? Sense perception is any capacity of sight, smell, hearing, taste, or touch, through which the body perceives external stimulus. Sense perception in and of itself is very complex due to the subjectivity of its nature. In other words, because no two people will see, taste, feel, smell, or hear the same object in exactly the same way there is an infinite number of different things they each may “know” about that object and the world around them.…

Discussions Perceptual process Perception refers to the set of processes we use to make sense of all the stimuli you encounter every second, from the glow of the computer screen in front of you to the smell of the room to the itch on your ankle. Our perceptions are based on how we interpret all these different sensations, which are sensory impressions we get from the stimuli in the world around us. Perception enables us to navigate the world and to make decisions about everything. There are three stages in perceptual process which includes exposure, attention and interpretation.…

People learn a great deal from their experiences as they can change their entire outlook and attitude towards life as well as their communication with others. Perception directly effects communication and explains how the same message can be interpreted differently by people. The relationships we have with people through communication enable us to have similar perceptions of the world, however no two people can see the world in exactly the same way because of differences in their fields of experience. There are experiences that we share together such as, love, the instinct to survive, the desire for health, knowledge and happiness but each individual has events in life that make them experience these things differently. Perception is affected…
