Rastafarianism is not only a religion but is also a way of life. Practicing this means the practice of peace and smoking marijuana to be one with the world. William Grant speaks of marijuana smoking and Rastafarianism stating, “They use the Ganja to help enlighten their mind so they can correctly reason the ways of the world,” This has nothing to do with their hair. Even before smoking marijuana, they treat it is a spiritual ritual, saying a prayer to Jah. Jah being the God the Rasta’s praise. Rasta’s also take literal meaning from the Bible to not put sharp objects on their head, this is also why they do not shave or comb their hair. Another reason for the locs is they represent a lion's mane. Lions in the culture are very important as they are the “respected king of the animal kingdom” yet is also humble. Another reason for the style is it is a natural state for many tribal people of Africa, their hair will form a loc/locs in result they feel closer to Jah. The fashion of dreadlocks also exists, wearing the locs just for looks, this is where stereotypes and misconceptions takes a huge part. Giuliana Rancic of the show Fashion Police was doing her job and making comments about the outfits of the night and made an inappropriate and stereotypical remark that because Zendaya wore hair in dreadlocks that she appears to smell of patchouli oil and marijuana. Even if her intentions were to be funny or not this statement was definitely uncalled for and cost Rancic her job even after she apologized. Zendaya responded very maturely and put Rancic in her place. Before sending her (Zendaya’s) response, she made sure that it would educate, inspire and be positive. She wanted to let people know they have a voice and can stand up for themselves. She lists scholars, grammy winners, doctors, that have the dreadlocks, and how successful they have become in their lives yet they do not smell like weed. What Rancic said is without a question stereotypical as I am sure she did not go up to Zendaya on the red carpet to smell her hair. Zendaya went on to say what the locs mean to her and tells people to educate themselves before being so fast to judge
