I awoke and began to do my morning routine: brush my teeth, button up my shirt, and get ready for the day. I slid my watch on my wrist when I heard my mother say “Oh my God.” from the kitchen. I walked into the kitchen and began to speak “What is it?” I asked my mother. I watched her look down at the screen of her phone and then back up to me with a look of distress on her face. “Jacob’s mother is dead.” She said in what almost sounded confused. That was the last thing I expected to come out of her mouth. My friend of six years mother had just passed away unexpectedly in her sleep. I felt as if I had been hit by a bus, all I could do was stare back at my mother with the same confused look she gave me when she told me. Life is a very taunting game; one never knows what will be next. This thrill scares some but invigorates others. These small moments that make up our lives is what we should be cherishing. Overlooking these moments is almost as equivalent to overlooking what makes you, you. I took a lesson from this unfortunate event to help mold me as a more appreciative person. To start counting my blessings everyday, being thankful that I woke up this morning, and that I get to see all of my friends faces to start off my days. I started to appreciate these things more than I ever had because I now knew how important they truly are.
