Plato's story of Atlantis has been discussed and theorized for centuries, causing many to wonder if he was being metaphorical or whether of not there really was an advanced civilization that sunk to the bottom of the sea. Because of the amount of scientific research and evidence that debunk the probability of a sunken civilization, the idea of Atlantis is unlikely.
The legend of Atlantis describes it as a technically advanced civilization with an abundance of natural resources, strong military, with great feats in engineering and building structure. It was said to be a utopia and was 'larger than Libya and Asia together'. Atlantis soon became greedy and became focused on world domination, something that the God Poseidon did not approve of. Poseidon ultimately destroyed Atlantis with earthquakes and tsunamis until the island was eventually engulfed by the sea.
This story of Atlantis was supposedly passed down to Plato by his ancestors, Critias and Solon. Solon was told the story by Egyptian Priests in the city of Sais, who stated that the continent of Atlantis existed 8,000 years prior and was located beyond "the pillars of Hercules", also known as the westernmost point of the Mediterranean
