General use of smoked marijuana holds a low health risk with little to no cases of lung cancer or emphysema, but can still cause significant damage to the respiratory system. An article called “What are Marijuana’s Effects on Lung Cancer?” by the NIDA or National Institute on Drug Abuse describe “Marijuana smoke, like tobacco smoke, is an irritant to the throat and lungs and can cause a heavy cough during use”. Medical Marijuana can be found to have many exceptional health benefits, but the amount of risk outweighs these opportunities. Knowing the scale of marijuana’s opportunities and dangers is beneficial as its medical use has been one of the many most controversial topics of the world.
