Newton and Bobby Seale both college students heard about Malcolm X 's assassination and founded The Black Panther Party for Self Defense. Huey and Bobby thought it was necessary to use violence or the threat of violence to make social change. Bobby Seale served in the air force for three years until he got discharged for bad conduct. When he founded the Black Panther Party he was the first one to strike. He and twentysix others marched to the California state capitol fully armed. They did this to protest about carrying loaded guns in public places, if whites can do it why can’t they? ("The Most Important Legacy of the Black Panthers” 1). So this made The Black Panthers stand out people was starting to notice them. So then Ronald Reagan passed the Mulford Act, which banned open carrying weapons based on the armed patrol of the Black Panther Party. After that the Black Panthers came up with the Ten Point Program, which is the goals they want to accomplish for their people, for themselves. Huey Newton and another member of the party Eldridge Cleaver ambushed some cops with a little group of there own, in Oakland 1967. Huey Newton killed one of the officers which put him in prison. He was sentenced for fifteen years for manslaughter.( "Whitewashing the Black Panthers"1). However the Black Panthers wasn’t going to let Huey stay there forever. The Panthers devoted most of their time trying to free Huey Newton. Soon a slogan was made “Free Huey” which other parties protested for awhile. This slogan really help Newton’s cause. However the case was dismissed after two retrials ended with hung juries. Later Newton was accused of more criminal charges to avoid prosecution he fled to Cuba in 1971. Bobby was really upset about Huey being arrested so he was protesting the most. One day he and a few others protested , where Huey was held and got arrested for holding weapons on the jail grounds. Because of the Black Panthers for Self Defense many other blacks started creating other groups for the rights of Blacks like, the Peace and Freedom Party, Brown Berets, Students for a Democratic Society, the SNCC, and the SCLC.
