1) In the short story “Wine on the Desert” by Max Brand, the main character of this short story whose name is Durante. Durante expresses the trait of planning before he acts as the book states that Durant would have a twenty-four hour head start before the people find the dead body. This shows that he has most likely planned when he would murder the victim so he would have a maximum time to get escape. Durante also demonstrates the trait of arrogance as he enters Tony's house and drinks Tony's water without even asking even though water is very scared in the desert. Durante is also dictator like as the short story states that Durante says, “Tony, come out-side with me commanded Durante” (p. 106) implies that despite that Durante is a guest at Tony's house and is also a friend of Tony's, he still …show more content…
When Tony states “This is old wine. This is my father's wine. Eleven years old” (p. 105) implies that the wine that Tony is serving to Durante is really good as wine tastes better the more it is aged. When Durante blows up Tony’s water tanks and laughs about how the sheriff and his posse are going to drink plenty of the good wine but die of thirst as Durante himself states that no one could cross the desert with only wine. It is ironic how Durante himself ends up being stuck in the middle of the desert with no water but good tasting wine. Irony is added to it when it starts to rain only a few hours later when Durante dies. This is ironic since as it rarely rains in the desert, if Durante were to have been alive for few more hours, he would have survived as it starts raining a few hours after he died which implies that the Tony, the sheriff, and his posse are going to survive, having a good laugh at Durante as he had died right before it rained, when Durante himself though that he would have a good laugh as the sheriff and posse realize that there is no water and die of

An example of a man who acted on impulse and did not think his adventure through is the author Krakauer. He believed, “...climbing the Devils Thumb would fix all that was wrong with my life” (Krakauer 155). Krakauer acted on impulse instead of thinking of what the end result would be. Males always make irrational decisions and do not realize it until it is too late. Krakauer almost died on his adventure and realized, “In the end, of course, it changed almost nothing”(Krakauer 155).…

In the short stories, “Under the I," “Penny in the dust," and “After the sirens," irony is used to express meaning. To begin with, in the first short story “Under the I” situational irony is used to contribute to the theme that in order to prosper in life, one must have a positive attitude and have the will to take chances in life in order to fulfill their potential. This idea is clearly demonstrated in the context by how Mrs. McNaughton taught Harold to be optimistic and stand up for himself rather than letting people rule his life for him after he discovered her secret “… Mrs. McNaughton couldn't be there. You see she did pass away —of a heart attack —there, last week after the bingo…” (Alford, 16). Further more, in the short story “Penny…

An example of this would be found when Hamlet repeatedly complains about his life (Shakespeare 44-46), which shows him overthinking his life, and says that he would commit suicide were it not for the fact that God fixed his laws against it (Shakespeare 44). As well, the central idea is shown when Hamlet says “a thought which, quartered, hath but one part wisdom and ever three parts coward” (Shakespeare 266) This develops the central idea because if a thought is mostly fear, then when one overthinks something it is less likely to get done because of that fear. Furthermore, the central idea is developed by the conflicts of Hamlet vs Laertes and Hamlet vs Claudius. While Hamlet took many months to accomplish his goal of killing Claudius, even with his long time to think of plans, both Claudius and Laertes killed Hamlet within a matter of days of Hamlet getting back from England with very little time to think of plans.…
