Character is at the center and both the authors and other research shows, it is the core element of all leadership effectiveness. Ethical standards, integrity, and authenticity are the sine qua non of strong character. With strong personal character, the leader is likely to be very open and transparent within the organization and amongst their associates. Figure 2 below shows all the underlying competencies within the five sectors (poles) of the of leadership tent.
The attributes within these sectors are considered building blocks for developing and producing great leaders. Not every great leader will possess or be strong in all 16 of these attributes; however, extraordinary leaders (in the top 10 percent) will exude and be strong in a

Thus, results, leadership effectiveness, and company performance dramatically improve when organizations focus on training and developing the 70th to 90th percentile leaders—great leaders make a great difference. The second insight the authors discuss is found within their tent leadership model. Key aspects of the sectors (tent poles) are: not all are equal, extraordinary leaders consist of a complex web of all 16 of these competencies within the five sectors; effective leadership demands a combination and balance of competencies; and higher capabilities and strength in each of the competencies extends the length of the pole. Increasing the height of multiple poles increases the volume in the tent and therefore, increases the overall effectiveness of the leader. The third insight the authors highlight is great leadership grows out of focusing on strengthening an individual’s strengths not necessarily eliminating their weaknesses. Too many good leaders and organizations spend too much time trying to improve weaknesses vice working to build upon already known strengths. On the EQ test we completed with Dr. Maggard I scored high on empathy which is a critical attribute within the interpersonal skills tent pole. Going forward I think continuing to strengthen all the attributes within this sector is where I will gain the most return on investment. Talking with folks who have previously worked in the JIIM environment, technical knowledge is important, however, the ability to work through issues on a personal level as well as build relationships amongst all the stakeholders is of utmost importance for moving forward on complex issues across the interagency and multinational environment. Taking this leadership class is one of the areas I identified in my Right to Lead Assessment Model (RLAM) paper in our Joint Strategic Leadership class. Understanding myself and knowing what my strengths and weaknesses are is critical to my leadership effectiveness in any organization.
