In the article Homework: Is Homework Beneficial to Students?, the author writes about a study by Stanford University and states, “Students in the study reported that homework was a primary cause of pressure and anxiety” (n.pg.). Teenagers already have a lot of stressors in their lives from their friends, family, and extracurricular activities; the stress behind homework makes it worse. Anxiety is a common issue among students in grade school. The elimination of homework will lessen the pressure students feel and the anxiety they have about school. Another health-related problem caused by homework is sleep deprivation. The author of Excessive Homework Strains Family Life writes about studies that have been done on teenagers and sleep: “Studies show that only 20 percent of adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17 get the recommended amount of sleep” (Ponte n.pg.). Sleep is an essential part of our well-being--it gives us the energy we need to use throughout the day. Sleep deprivation affects abstract thinking, the capability to pay attention, verbal creativity, and mood and motivation in general. All of these skills are needed to succeed in school.
