Class Selection In High School

Anyone who has attended Benet Academy can understand the freedom senior year brings. This freedom, however, is not the escape of high school or the fact that graduation is looming around the corner. It is finally being able to chose one 's own classes for the first time while attending Benet. In most schools, students are presented with class selections as early as their freshman year. For some, this may be an opportunity to make each year in high school a breeze. For others though, class selection is a way to add vigor and variety to a boring schedule. Benet Academy should allow students to choose their classes earlier in their Benet career because not only would the students benefit, but also the school and its staff. Firstly, Benet Academy …show more content…
Parents may be more swayed to send their kids to Benet if it increased their child 's chance of on time graduation. Afterall, college is not cheap and every extra year spent at college is more debts to pay. Benet Academy could be the school parents send their kids to that is private, small, but still has all the positive opportunities of a public school. If Benet were to offer more classes of interests and allow students to take them, it could also increase the amount of students that actually attend Benet. Benet could attract a much larger audience if its schedule for its students was not so strict. More students might want to go here because they could take challenging classes that they are interested in instead of taking challenging classes that they are being forced to take. At Benet, students are told what to wear, how fast to eat, and are required to be on campus all times of the school day. Letting students choose what to learn could make the student feel as if they were at least in a little control of their education. If they felt this, it could increase their want to go to school and also the overall attitude they have while they are at school. This change could make Benet a very happy and healthy environment for adolescent. According to Ron Highfield, "self-worth and happiness are dependent upon constructing ourselves according to our will and desires" (Haack 57). Happier students would mean …show more content…
Having more classes to teach means less of a boring day for the teachers who have to teach the same material five times a day. It is true that this may be a teacher 's job, but if a simple fix could make their jobs more enjoyable, then there is no reason not to make that change. Instead, they could teach multiple different classes. Then each class can be approached with the same amount of enthusiasm as a teacher has during first period. This would ultimately improve the learning environment of students and work environment of teachers. Perhaps though, a reason for the limited options of classes is because of the limited supply of teachers Benet has to offer. This can be solved by hiring more teachers. At first, this may be financially hard. However, as time goes on and Benet 's program is improved hopefully it will attract a bigger audience than it previously did. As far as finances, hiring more teachers is like an investment. There is a chance that Benet could lose money, but if Benet invests carefully and wisely there is a greater chance of a

With school having many students but not very many teachers classes are skewed beyond belief. Students do not get to pick their courses but are randomly assigned. This means if a student is interested in let’s say hairdressing and she gets put in a sewing class she is stuck in that sewing class. So students that are qualified to take an AP course may not be able to be put in those classes because they are randomly assigned and that means some kids are destined to fail if they are not up to AP standards and are put in an AP course. In addition, if students do not have internet or a place to study they have only a half hour after school to work in the library.…

While it is not surprise that it appeals to students as in encourages the primal instinct of living for yourself and for no other reason and what kind of lesson is that. “For i know what happiness is possible to me on earth. If the system narrows down the requirements too much, it is going to make a majority of students look bad because standardization allows a general idea of how well a student performs. Davidson does not provide a solution to this issue, however, there is a way to satisfy both the education system and the student so there is a benefit to both. If an education system makes it a requirement for students to choose their own elective courses, outside of the math and English classes, it allows the students to explore their interests and won’t be labeled as failures when they show…

The last two years have been busy, as I have moved twice, resulting in my attendance to three separate high schools. This gives me first hand experience in many different types of schedules. In junior high, I had an A/B block type schedule, we had the same core classes everyday but our electives would alternate each day. Freshman year I had a 4x4 block schedule with 4 90 minute classes a day and classes were only a semester long (8 credits). Sophomore year I attended a school with trimesters, 5 70min classes per day, lasting 2 out of the 3 trimesters.…

In light of the new state mandated desegregation of schools, one local high school is overcoming amazing obstacles. At the beginning of the school year parents and students rioted over the new desegregated school, T.C. William’s High. Despite this rioting and racism issues the football team has managed to shine, bringing the whole school along with the community together. The team themselves had issues with a new black head coach Coach Boone. T.C. William’s Titans was thought to me the underdog among football at the beginning of the school year and now is the team to beat.…

Segregation has been a concept fed to children without its presence being realized for the longest of time. Growing up; Palo Alto has and still is been divided into two, the Paly side and the Gunn side. Each kid would grow up knowing their educational plan for up until they are eighteen. The children of different sides might have been in the same school as youngins, and they would ask in aspiration for their paths to be intertwined a little longer. As the different schools were said from their mouths, their hope fades and their personalities become engulfed by the bad rumors each has heard from the other school.…

Income and wealth inequality have divided the United States for at least two centuries. Karl Marx a German economist believed that two classes of people exist due to income and wealth inequality the capitalist class and the working class. These two classes of people became ever more prevalent during the Industrial Revolution. Today, more than one hundred years later class conflicts still exist which is what Marx also believed was necessary to produce social change. I am choosing to write about this topic because I feel that class stratification is just as much a conflict today as it has ever been.…

Finding new ways to persuade students to be present to class is vital for the administration. Eliminating one day per week could be enough to motivate the students to attend class more frequently. As a consequence to this solution, the attendance policy would be more strict, fewer days would be allowed to miss, and classes would be longer. Every class Monday-Thursday would be an hour and thirty minutes long, instead of having fifty minute classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and an hour and a half classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Nevertheless, with a four-day school week, students would be able to fit more activities in on their three day break for friends and family, relaxation, and job responsibilities.…
