If abortion were illegal, women bullied into keeping unwanted pregnancies would sink below the poverty level and find themselves stuck in cruel and abusive relationships.
If abortion were illegal, women with unwanted pregnancies would travel to places like Mexico to buy illicit abortion-inducing drugs, order pills online or try to instigate abortion using unsafe methods heard through the grapevine. Some women would take the wrong amount, at the wrong time in the pregnancy, and end up hospitalised.
If abortion were illegal, women with nonviable pregnancies or health issues, or women who are miscarrying would be at risk of receiving inferior care. They would find their health set aside as doctors consider the fate of their foetuses over their own.
What if I told you that every one of these things are already transpiring in Australia as a result of increasing restrictions on legal abortion, and the efforts of the “pro-life” movement, largely influenced by the Catholic Church’s involvement in the healthcare system?
