In the current era of technology-driven communication, social media has become the newest and most effective way to communicate in the world (Nikken and Haan, 2015). Social media can allow individuals to access other at the click of a button, however, social media can have an impact on everyone in today's society. Some of these impacts may be positive or negative however the impact is present. social media may impact all classes, races, and nationalities, however, there are differences amongst those classes that can determine the impact that one is dealing with in regards to social media.
This research will review how social media is impacting the African- American family and how social media is affecting African American adolescent's engagement with their families. There is minimal research on the topic of social media and the impact it has on the African American family. Due to the limited amount of research conducted on social media as it pertains to family engagement the research is identified as the gap and will need to be explored so that interventions may be developed to assist with the increase of African-American family's engagement.
