The Personal Responsible and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 was argued among the Liberals and Conservatives to being helpful or harmful. The people who were more conservative believed it was a great policy because it was a major success. Since, the percentage of people who were on welfare dramatically decreased and got jobs for themselves. The purpose of the reform was responsible for helping the poor pay for welfare, as well as encourage those people to get a job for themselves, or are attending school or enrolled in training programs. However, Liberals claim that the policy has reduced welfare assistance, but it has not reduced poverty in America because there are only low-wage jobs available.…

As a matter of public policy, an employer shall not be required to be reinstate an unlawfully terminated employee when the employee is an illegal alien. If an employer was to have to reinstate an illegal alien, they would be violation of the Immigration Reform and Control Act. In 1986, the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) passed in order to prohibit employers from knowingly hiring, recruiting, or referring for a fee any alien who is unauthorized to work (“Immigration Reform”, n.d.). The IRCA, signed under President Ronald Reagan, also allowed those employees to be given a pathway to citizenship (Rojas, 2013).…
3. The U.S.A. Patriot Act is an antiterrorism policy set forth immediately following the attacks of 9/11, in which various federal agencies are given increased power in determining the reach of domestic surveillance, interagency data sharing, law enforcement, immigration, individual privacy, civil liberties, and overall authority. The consequences of such an extensive act include endangerment of privacy, discouragement of free speech, potential abuses of civil liberties, an imbalanced and unchecked government authority, and increases in discrimination and profiling against Muslims, Arabs, and people who appear related to those two previous labels. Guantanamo Bay is an off shore military prison that holds people whom the U.S. consider to be suspected terrorists. Technically prisoners of the Bay are supposed to be guaranteed “humane treatment, free exercise of religion and medical treatment”(Civil Liberties).…

The law on consorting with criminals is not a new one; it merged in the late 1920s in NSW, however it has been disregarded over the years. Passing of the Vagrancy Act 1902 in 1929 ushered the introduction of the consorting laws in NSW. The laws were first introduce to combat organized crimes especially the razor gangs. Gang members in the Sydney region had resorted to using razors rather than guns after the introduction of the Pistol Licensing Act 1927. The Vagrancy Act criminalized habitual associating with reputed criminals including prostitutes and people known not to have legal means of support.…
In 2014, Irish drag queen Miss Panti Bliss presented a 10-minute speech at the Abbey Theatre. She spoke about her own experience as a gay individual living in Ireland, and her sense of internal subjugation. This essay will analyze her speech using JL Austin’s theory of speech acts. Panti tries to create an essential moment based on the “feelings, thoughts or actions of the audience” as she performs a “locutionary act” (Nordenstam, 141). Austin explains that the locutionary act is “to perform or utter a sentence that has a particular meaning, as traditionally conceived” (Langton, 295).…
The Real ID Act, which was sponsored by Representative Jerry Lewis and signed into law by the President on May 11, 2005, has set federal standards for the issuance of driver’s licenses and requires aliens to prove their "legal presence" in the United States (Thomas, HR 1268.) Its basic purpose is to ensure that state-issued licenses and IDs meet certain standards and requirements that the federal government sets before they will be considered valid. This piece of legislation has caused quite a bit of debate since its origination and passage into law. Some throughout the United States support this piece of legislation because they believe it will protect our country, as well as keep us out of harms way with regard to terrorism.…
As I searched journals and websites for material on the research involving auto thefts, I found very few articles. In fact, according to one author, motor vehicle thefts are the number one under-researched part one crime (Jeffrey Walsh, 2007). In this same article studies indicate auto thefts are linked to community structure, instability and surrounding crime (Jeffrey Walsh, 2007). The author theorizes the reason for the lack of research is the crime itself creates little effect on most victims. That said, stability of a neighborhood has an affect on auto theft incidents.…
The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) of 1986 was created during the Reagan Administration as the first significant federal legislation designed to combat the growing threat against computer based crimes. In the 1980 's, Congress would only have the vaguest of notions how computer technology would evolve as a medium for communications and social-networking. Lawmakers, at the time, recognized the federal interest of the U.S. government was to protect computers under control of a federal entity, part of a financial institution or somehow involved in interstate or foreign commerce. The CFAA was therefore a crucial piece of legislation that protected U.S. interest in terms of national security and financial information.…
