Due to the fact that To Kill a Mockingbird takes place during the The Great Depression, all families within the text suffer financially developing a normality for there to be a financial classification between the families.

As a result of the novel being based within the time frame of the Great Depression, families all over Maycomb struggle financially: "The Cunninghams are country folks, farmers, and the crash hit them hardest." (Lee, 27). Atticus explains that the depression heavily affected the Cunninghams, strongly due to the fact that they rely on their farming. After hearing what her father has to say, Scout now has a mindset that she is ‘better’ than the Cunninghams due to their low financial status. As the novel continues, Scout begins
