Nursing has evolved so much through the years. Until starting back to school, I didn’t even realize how vast this occupation actually is. I feel the only way to change this perception is by education. Nurses are shifting from providing just hands-on care to so much more. According to the book, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, it talks about a fundamental shift that will provide delivering more care in the community rather than just an acute care setting. It discusses that all health care professionals need to be able to practice to the full range of their education and training (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the Institute of Medicine, 2011). It may take time, but as these community-oriented nurses expand their practice and educate, I feel that people’s perceptions will change.

There are many patients living on life support, patients who struggle to breath everyday with chronic illnesses like COPD. In Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the chart breaks down what I feel is another good criterion for prioritizing a population. The lowest point on the pyramid shows the highest level of need (Maslow 's Hierarchy, n.d.). I feel that addressing the most debilitated in the community first, is a good way to prioritize.
There are multiple organizations in my area that deliver primary health care to the community. The first one is an organization called Heart of Florida Health Center (HFHC). According to HFHC, there mission is to improve the overall health in Marion county. They provide medical, dental and mental health to all residents. Much of the funding comes from local hospitals, but they also charge by a sliding scale fee that is regulated by the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
