First Semester of Life at Marshall What is the point of all this? Why do people spend thousands of dollars to come Marshall University and places alike? Why does the school make students take classes that are not even needed for their major? Also, why do students, such as myself, worry so much about the possible problems that college can bring us? These, along with many others, are just some of the questions college students ask themselves as they start a new chapter in their lives, and each of them, including me, have their own answers. People decide to come to Marshall University for so many different reasons that is impossible to count and understand all of them. Some come because they got a scholarship, whether it be athletic or academic. Some, including me, come because they are a legacy to someone in their family that also attended school here. Then some come just because Marshall is a college, and they had to pick somewhere to go, so why not give it a try? Despite everyone else’s reasons, I am here because my older sister and maternal …show more content…
Once move-in day was here, I never truly realized just how big of a change college is. Living in a dorm has been the biggest change for me personally. Once the first weekend on campus came, I learned that it was nothing that I could not handle. I realized that it was just going to take some time to adapt to this new part of life. Of course, I have worries of classes and grades, but I have always tried to not let myself think too far in advanced. Sometimes, I fail badly at this and end up worrying about something that is not due for another month, after I had just completed some assignments already. Luckily, I have learned to not let myself do this as much as I used to. Hopefully, I will be able to continue this mindset of taking each day and each assignment as its

An obstacle I hit was myself. I’m always procrastinating about my assignments which is resulting in me to be working on them late at night or not doing them at all. I will eventually overcome this issue before the end of the quarter by learning to use my time more wisely. College is what I expected it feels like high school to me but way better because I don’t have to wake up early in the mornings and the parking lot is never full unlike at Camas High School. Two habits I developed are discipline and determination and I believe these two habits will help me succeed with my time…

Mine isn't really facts but the life lessons that he teaches us. For example tell his players when he is going to make the cut so they only have to be by the phones for an hour and not the whole weekend. That can help me in the future because if I can grow up and become a CFO, as my job I should tell my boss when I am going to be done with taxes. I shouldn't just be like, um yea be around your phone in the next week or so. That will get me fired real quick.…

Going into freshman year, I was told by upper classmen to get involved in every extracurricular activity Iowa-Grant has to offer. I took this advice and joined FBLA, not knowing what FBLA was all about. My freshman year, was the opening year for the Panther Pit Stop, this gave me insight on what it takes to run a small business and all hard work it takes for a successful business. Working in the store, I have learned in order to be successful and get more business, you need to take risks and try new things. I feel the most important thing I have learned through FBLA, is in order to be a successful group you have to work all together as one unit. The success of the school store, the spaghetti dinners, and the new printing press business is all…

The sun shined bright, not a cloud in the sky. 72 degrees, a slight breeze coming in from the ocean. It is without a doubt the most gorgeous day I can remember in my life. Ironically, it is also the first day I can remember. It was my second day of preschool, my parents woke me up bright and early to get ready. I was excited to go and see all the friends I had made on my first day. My family and I quickly ate breakfast and I fastened myself into my car seat. On the way, I could catch a glimpse outside my car window of what I now know is the New York City skyline. Two grey towers that are almost identical, although one seemed to be just an inch taller scraping the skies in the forefront, and the Empire State Building just beyond them. I was…

College is a vast place where one goes to grow as an academic and as a person. As a freshman, it has been more of a place where reality hits you right in the face. During my first quarter, I was confident that I could succeed in all my classes or that I could get by with the same efforts that I placed back in high school. When my grade came back for the fall quarter, I felt like a failure. College is not high school, and I learned this the hard way. This quarter I basically live in my hall's study room trying to focus more on my studies. Not only this, but I am trying to take classes that I enjoy more.…

My sophomore year is almost over, and now looking back, I have noticed some differences between freshmen and sophomore year. The first most evident difference is the workload. There is an increase of amount of homework during sophomore year than in freshmen year. Despite the necessary increase in effort and time consumption, I view this change as an opportunity that allowed me to gain the skill of time management. This ability is reflected upon my homework grade, I am able to hand all my homework on time.…

If you asked me to pick a moment in time, a pinnacle decision in which my future hinged on the real progress of “what could be;” when and where would I go? Would it be to go back to my first semester of college littered with bad choices and worse decisions? Or maybe, just maybe, it would be the day I chose to abandon my real passion for science to appease fellow peers and fit into a mold? The answer; is none of the above. My life has been a serving platter of failures, sincerely, pick any one of my past’s Hors D’oeuvres and you’ll taste an experience traversing your taste-buds through a multitude of flavors: grainy, sweet, vinegary, or just, plain. However, without those I wouldn’t be the person I am today, determined to achieve and accomplish…

College has been a huge eye opener for me. Going into college, you expect it to be a certain way, but for me, I learned that it is a lot different than what I expected. My first semester of college really was something else. I have some memories that I will never forget, but I also have some experiences that I can learn from. Being a pre-nursing student comes with its challenges, but I found a couple ways that ease all of your emotions during the semester. Since I have learned a lot of things my first semester, I am going to apply them to the rest of my semesters in college. I plan to set goals for the spring semester and have a plan for how I am going to achieve them.…

One goal I have for my freshman year is to succeed in my introductory courses. I do not want to just pass each course; I want to really understand the content and nature of each subject that I am currently taking because each course after the fall quarter builds upon the previous one. My goal GPA is 3.5 or better to be on par for medical school acceptance. I hope to become involved in research this year. I plan to apply to the STARS Scholars Program. I also applied as an undergraduate lab research assistant position for federal work study. I would like to become involved and campus life and join a few extracurricular activities. I intend to join the Blue Diamond Step Team, the Minority Association for Pre-Health Students, and HerCampus Drexel. Panhellenic Recruitment ended last week and I decided not to participate until I am completely acclimated to college life. I plan to participate in informal recruitment during the spring and join Greek life. I am also currently a new Lindy Scholar advisor and hope to contribute as much service as possible this year.…

Party, drink, sleep, and repeat. That is the typical stereotype for students as they begin to embark on their own journey towards a career that they are interested in pursing. Many parents weep with praise as they watch as their sons and daughters graduate from high school transitioning into a different mindset as they enter the college universe. For other students, this change of scenery is very fearful and crucial in how they live deeming their moral values in deciding what is right and wrong. Attending college means more than just partying. Most people attend college to find their purpose in life. Not only by creating life long relationships with other individuals, but to flourish in an environment where they are able to receive growth in an educational setting.
