The best college students learn very quickly that the best thing that they can do is never give up, discover something new every day, work with the community as best as they can and show great respect for the learning community. They also learn that service to the community is essential and they do this by helping others and making them stronger learners. Although Bain’s book does a very good job of explaining all of these values, the one that stands out to me is that of discovery. Discovery stands out because in order to learn you must find/discover something new every day in order to be the best learner that you can be.…

The purpose of college, this question can be answered in many different ways. The purpose of college for some people might be to get a degree and move on into the next chapter in life, but I feel that college should be more than that. I feel that college should be a way to express yourself in ways you couldn’t before and to be able to explore new ideas and to shape yourself to become someone new. College for some people might seem like just another step in the never ending staircase of life, but to me college is more than, that it's shaping me into the person I want to become and shaping my life for what I want and who I want to be. The purpose of college is to find a source of happiness, whether that is a field of study a person or something else is up for you to…

With the high demand for students to obtain a college degree, the majority of society assumes high school seniors should make college the next step in their lives. However, going to college and actually completing the journey is much easier said than done. Many factors such as the price of tuition, the increased competition for scholarships and admission, and the level of support and encouragement one has affect those "college times" in a person 's life. An aspect of this journey that really stands out to me is the use of programs that aid first-generation college students. From the financial aid to the programs ' mentoring benefits, these programs can make a huge difference in the lives of so many people hoping to obtain the education they…

As a young person, choosing what to study is one of the hardest decision you have to make. According to a Washington Post article, “What’s the purpose of college: A job or an education?” by Jeffrey J. Selingo, learning and getting more knowledge about the world used to be a purpose of higher education, but nowadays it switched to getting a job after graduation rather than gaining more knowledge. Education is the most important factor in order to be successful, but lots of people are in college because their parents want them to, while others think that college is the next destination they have to go through after high school. To me, college is the place that teaches us how to think, how to analyze things thoroughly and to pursue a good career…

In Jillioan’s case she had a strong academic past, but was faced when roommate issues that would stress her out and distract her in class. Melissa had great grades, but she procrastinated and worked 30 or more hours a week at her job. This caused her to loose track of time and miss assignment or needed study time for her classes. In the end however she found her self and was able to get back on her academic track by making the deans list every year. For my self, I live at home during the school year and do not have a roommate. I do on the other hand have a brother that I constantly fight with so he is like a roommate. To solve this conflict I just leave the house when ever I need to study or work on homework. I go to the library, a Starbucks, or even my frat house where I can get academic help and input from other on papers or assignments. Melissa was a procrastinator and worked 30 plus hours a week. I have the same issue. I work 25-30 hours a week and put off my studies sometimes. To combat this I talked to my boss, who was vary understanding, and asked him to cut my hours to…

Once move-in day was here, I never truly realized just how big of a change college is. Living in a dorm has been the biggest change for me personally. Once the first weekend on campus came, I learned that it was nothing that I could not handle. I realized that it was just going to take some time to adapt to this new part of life. Of course, I have worries of classes and grades, but I have always tried to not let myself think too far in advanced. Sometimes, I fail badly at this and end up worrying about something that is not due for another month, after I had just completed some assignments already. Luckily, I have learned to not let myself do this as much as I used to. Hopefully, I will be able to continue this mindset of taking each day and each assignment as its…

Community colleges have changed dramatically over the past decade. The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC, 2012) defined this change and called for “community college leaders to breathe life into the vision outlined by the Commission, in which students’ educational experiences are redesigned, institutional roles are reinvented, and the system itself has been reset to meet the needs of students, their communities, and the nation.” (p. vi). In addition, the traditional model of college is changing. The Chronicle Research Services published a report named The College of 2020: Students in 2009 and stated that more students learning method will change in the future – they will attend classes online, study part time, or take courses from different institutions. My first semester of college has been an intersting learning experience. It has been full of ups and downs. I’ve learned a lot since being in college, mostly how to take charge of my life and get my priorities straight. I learned that being successful in college depends on how you prioritize your work and how serious you take it. At first my priorities weren 't where they were supposed to be, and I realized my grades were going to suffer if I did not change. A big part of college is maturing and getting your priorities straight, and that’s one big thing I’ve learned so far.
