Personal Narrative: My First Day At Middle Tennessee State University

Great Essays
One of the things that made the first day at Middle Tennessee State University great was that it was the first time that I realized how close I was to achieving my goal. Since I was a child, I had dreamed of studying abroad to earn my degree. I had already been studying in the United States for some time. During that time, I was studying the English language to be prepared for the academic language I would face at the university level of studying. Studying language has a way of bringing a person down, though. Any small mistake can seem like a disaster. It can be quite discouraging on a daily basis. Once I had advanced through enough levels to be able to gain admittance to the university, though, I was beyond ecstatic. Here on the first day at Middle Tennessee State University, I knew that I would have a chance to utilize all of the skills that I had just spent countless hours studying. This was my big chance to prove that I could really do all the things I had dreamed of doing.

I scanned the room for the best seat in the house. That is when I saw Sarah waving to me. “Come sit next to me, Ahmad,” she chimed in. Perfect, I thought, as I walked over to take the desk next to her. I was thrilled to have made a new friend in my very first class. Before this day, I had met many American people through conversation partners and teachers at my language institute. This was the first time I was talking to someone who was on the same playing field as me. I quickly learned that Sarah was taking the same major as me, and in fact, we had three classes together. I felt relieved that I would have a friend in most of my

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

I notice my peers who helped me to succeed, regardless of how overwhelmed I sometimes felt, who encouraged me and reminded me of my strengths. I reflect on the semester I spent abroad to embrace the Spanish culture and language.…
