She’s so good at it that her grandparents always want to hear more about what happened. On page 70 Sal said to the reader that her grandparents would always go quiet and concentrate on her story. Somehow it was easier to deal with Margaret if there were reasons not to like her, and I definitely did not want to like her.” (21) This quote means that Sal knows how Phoebe thinks and that these things aren’t secret because it doesn’t tell anything secret about Phoebe. How this quote relates to the storyline is that Phoebe is another important character in the story and that Sal just wants to tell her grandparents about her probably so that they know her better and it’s also important that they know about Phoebe because that detail is important to the story. How this quote shows that Sal changes is that like before she shares really no secrets about Phoebe and Phoebe and Sal are the main characters in the stories that Sal tells in the beginning, but in the middle of the book and almost the end, she tells way more secrets about her and Phoebe than she did in the beginning. During the eighteen years I have lived my experiences have been fairly sheltered. I have never traveled out of the country, eaten exotic foods, or gone skydiving; consequently, I haven’t met many people of special interest. Not to say the people I have met are not interesting, on the contrary, most of the people I have come to know all have their own unique stories and experiences; however, I never did meet anyone quite like Miss May. To this day I can’t pinpoint what exactly it was about her that intrigued me so much, maybe it was her rich brown hair and almond-shaped eyes, or how she pronounced candy more like “kehn-dee”, or it definitely could have been the way her eyes lit up when she smiled—still she will always remain a mystery to me.…
