The Birthmark Symbolism Essay

To Be or Not To Be An old word asks us: “To be or not to be, is a question.” How does a person think of death in daily life? What makes a person commit suicide rather than live a better life? What experience does a person go through leading him to give up the hope of existence? In our reading, “The Birth-mark” and “A wall of fire rising”, Hawthorne and Danticat use representative symbols, such as the birthmark and the balloon, to show pursuing to perfection and freedom. Symbolism is one obvious figure of speech using in the two essays. In those two essays, I want to find the meanings behind those symbols in order to understand the author’s attitude to humanity and life. In the Birthmark, the significant symbol is Birthmark. “The mark wore a tint of deeper crimson, which imperfectly defined its shape amid the surrounding rosiness. When she blushed it gradually became more indistinct, and finally vanished amid the triumphant rush of blood that bathed the whole cheek with its brilliant glow.” The first mark description …show more content…
Science is a significant subject but it isn’t the only truth in the world. In our lifetime, there are many more meanings for existence. The birthmark is also a signal to remind human of their relationship with nature. Human is still too small when facing the natural power. The only way to save the world is to rebuild a sustainable, environmental friendly, and mutual benefit method with nature. “A wall of fire rising”, my favorite essay, shows how a struggling person chases the dream no matter what troubles he should solve. “Live freely or we should die” brings us the author’s attitude when facing the death. There is no reason for us to live without freedom. I hope the Guy’s tragedy would never happen again since we all experience the difficulties of life and what we can do is to look for the promising future through the
