If I was a client of the practicum agency, I would expect the social worker to be professional, competent, and knowledgeable and meet the standards that are expected of the social worker. In addition, I would expect that the social worker who has many roles would have the knowledge and skills to know what interventions, theories, and models to use for helping clients individually and continue to learn new methods that may help clients or residents in the future. Decisions regarding what the resident wants versus the family, insurance issues could provide ethical dilemmas, end-of-life decisions, power of attorney and the client or resident and many others. In addition, many decisions should be made ahead of time so families do not end up having ethical dilemmas when making such decisions, however, I feel most ethical dilemmas relate to these types of issues, however a social worker also needs to understand the laws and standards that are put in place. In addition, because there are many different ethical dilemmas that could occur it is important to be educated about such matters and understand the law and the rights of the client and so forth. A social worker working in a nursing home needs to be educated about insurance, agency policies, and all the laws that apply to the client and there care and so on.
